Domaine de Mirail

Charles Hochman

History

Guilhem de Mirailhs the fonder planted the first wine stock of the estate in 1491. At the end of the 19th century, the phylloxera destroyed the vineyard and the reputation of the estate. In 1998 the Hochman family bought the 30 ha of the vines in a state of neglect. Charles Hochman father and son men of challenges are convinced of the extraordinary potential of their terroir and try with success to raise once again the estate to its historically previous very high position. The family adventure is now launched…

The estate

Domaine de Mirail is located in the heart of the Gers departement, on the hillside near the city of Lectoure.

  • 35 ha - 200 000 bottles
  • 45% White (Colombard, Petit Manseng, Gros Manseng)
  • 35% Red (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah)
  • 15% Rosé (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon)
  • 5% Spirit (Folle blanche)

The vineyard

To preserve our environment we limit the use of treatments to their strict necessity and plant systematically grass between the rows. In addition plantations densities are voluntary very high - 7000 stocks per hectare for the reds – the highest in Côtes de Gascogne- in order to produce wines that are elegant and racy. Also we carry out numerous manual interventions during the vegetative cycle such as de-budding (ébourgeonnage), traininig vines on wires (palissage) and green harvests.

The terroir

Two kinds of soils: one clay-limestone, typical from the north of Gers which give these Gascony wines particularly lively and fruity. The other one, homeland of our grands vins, called “Peyrusquet” which characterizes by a not too deep soil on original limestone rock from Lectoure producing naturally low yields.

The climate

Oceanic weather with the influence of southern winds. These winds favour the maturation of the grapes and prevent from disease appearance.

The cellar

The cellar is equipped with cement tanks and stainless vats all thermo-regulated, one pneumatic press and one barrels winery for the grands vins. An other barrels winery is entirely devoted to the spirits.
