Château Montauriol

Nicolas Gélis

History

“Mons Aureolus”, Golden Mountain according to the Romans, the terroir of Château Montauriol has crossed centuries with glory and wine-growing panache.

The estate

In June 1998, Nicolas Gelis acquired Château Montauriol and strive for quality while respecting the vineyard and wine production process.

  • 45 ha - 270 000 bottles
  • 75% Red (Négrette, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon)
  • 25% Rosé and Flambant (Négrette, Syrah, Gamay)

The vineyard

Only organic plant composts are used for soil enrichment and trace elements to help stimulate the plants’ own natural defense system. Cover crops are also used between rows to compete with the vines, lower yields, limit soil erosion and help stimulate organic life in the soil.

The terroir

Two distinct lots:

  • the flat area, of about fifteen hectares with clayey soil, producing fine and complex wines,
  • the hilly croup with about twenty-five hectares, where you can both find “rougets” (clayey earth with strong content of iron oxide) and deep pebbles which contribute to the vine’s power and concentration. This way we have a big variety of soil profiles which permits us, using the same grape variety, to be able to produce a very interesting aromatic diversity from our different “cuvees”.

The climate

Located between Toulouse and Montauban, Château Montauriol benefits from the double influence of the oceanic weather as well as the one of the Mediterranean weather. It is characterized by a very long period of sunshine and limited rain.

The cellar

The winery has 5,000 hl of temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats to which must also be added the air-conditioned barrel cellar with more than 200 barrels as well as four 50-hectolitre tanks made of oak. They are equipped with micro-oxygenation sets to enhance the maturing process in vats as well as in barrels.
